Tottenham in talks over new contract for 22-year-old amid heavy transfer interest

Tottenham Hotspur are currently working to tie down a 22-year-old who is attracting plenty of loan and permanent transfer interest this summer.

While Spurs fans have been raving about the way Jamie Donley impressed at Leyton Orient last season, another Tottenham loanee was just as impressive for the O’s.

Goalkeeper Josh Keeley kept 16 clean sheets for the club in League One and was instrumental in taking them to the play-off final, where they lost 1-0 to Charlton Athletic.

The 22-year-old has since even been capped for the Republic of Ireland. It was reported last month that Keeley could be rewarded with a new contract at Tottenham, and that is now coming to fruition.

Tottenham trying to tie down Josh Keeley amidst heavy interest

Football.London are now reporting that Spurs have begun talks with extending Keeley’s current deal, which runs until 2027.

The Lilywhites are intent on getting the goalkeeper to commit to a new deal in North London before heading out on loan again for the upcoming season.

With Spurs having a strong trio of goalkeepers in Guglielmo Vicario, Antonin Kinsky and Brandon Austin, it is expected to be difficult for Keeley to break into the Tottenham first-team squad.

There is no shortage of interest in the Irishman, with a whole host of clubs across the Champions and League One expressing an interest in a loan deal as well as a permanent transfer.

One factor may prevent Keely from being part of Thomas Frank’s plans

The young shot-stopper may have hopes of catching the eye of Thomas Frank and his coaching staff during pre-season, but one factor may prevent him from being considered for the first-team even if he impresses.

Football.London point out that Keeley does not qualify as homegrown despite being at Spurs for three years as he spent his formative years at Irish side St Patrick’s Athletic.

With Tottenham already having a shortage of homegrown and club-trained players, Frank would be unlikely to use an overseas spot on the young goalkeeper, particularly for the Champions League squad.
