Man charged after ‘café windows smashed and staff assaulted’

A man has been charged after a member of staff at a family-run café was allegedly threatened and assaulted.

Police were initially called to a disturbance at The Florist Café in Strood High Street following reports of a man shouting at customers inside.

Officers attended the incident last Tuesday (July 1) and a man was instructed to leave the shop.

Later that day, it was reported that plant pots and a window were damaged at the same premises and a member of staff was threatened and assaulted.

A suspect was arrested the following day and taken into custody.

Mehmet Mustafa, 52, of Luton Road, Chatham, was charged with assault, making threats intending the victim to fear they would be carried out, possession of an offensive weapon and criminal damage.

He appeared before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Friday (July 4) and has been further remanded to a hearing at the same court tomorrow (July 9).

Police say the victim has been provided with support and updates regarding the ongoing investigation.
