One benefit of a PS Plus Premium subscription is a catalog of retro games. Sadly, the library isn’t growing as quickly as some gamers would like. A new interview describes how Sony often waits for publishers and developers to submit candidates.
Retro gaming fans find the limited number of classics on PS Plus Premium frustrating. Despite an extensive back catalog, many of the most popular PlayStation titles remain unavailable. Apparently, Sony sometimes relies on studios to initiate the submission process. A Push Square interview with the producer of Battle Engine Aquila provides insight into how games end up on the subscription service.
Alex Lotz of Ziggurat explains that the developers contacted Sony about their 2003 action title. PlayStation handled the technical challenges in emulating the game for the PS4 and PS5. Meanwhile, Ziggurat approved of the builds and expanded on a trophy list suggested by Sony. PS Plus Premium members can now play Battle Engine Aquila for free, while non-subscribers must pay for the privilege.
Gamers may be surprised by how receptive PlayStation is to requests from makers of retro games. Unfortunately, the company has been less accommodating to console owners. Chrono Trigger is a notable title missing from the service, while not all Resident Evil and Tomb Raider games are accessible. Critics wish that Sony would be more aggressive with its efforts to add classics.
The popularity of remakes and remasters may explain why there aren’t more retro PS Plus games on any tier. Publishers find it lucrative to re-release older games with enhanced visuals or updated controls. However, buyers frequently pay a premium to relive the past with these versions. Sony’s subscription service could offer a more affordable way to access a wide range of games through a single interface.
Another issue with classic titles that annoys gamers is related to licensing. Acquiring the rights to older releases often requires consent from multiple partners. Some of these companies may no longer be operating.
For now, nostalgic PlayStation users must resort to PCs, other consoles, or emulators for a more complete selection.
