12 years later, here’s what’s left of the most hated video game in history

A glimpse into the past of one of the worst games, revealing a project that never saw the light of day.

More than a decade has passed since Ride to Hell: Retribution earned a place among the worst video games ever released. That infamous Deep Silver-published was slammed for its clunky gameplay, outdated graphics, terrible voice acting and a narrative so stilted it bordered on the absurd. Now, a new piece of that failed story has come to light: a leaked video reveals scenes from Route 666, a spin-off that was never officially announced by Eutechnyx and ended up cancelled before seeing the light of day.

The leak, reported by TheGamer, appeared on the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit, where user TanFlo1997 shared the footage. The images correspond to a build from April 2013, just a few months before Retribution’s disastrous release. What is shown is not particularly promising, but curious.

A Sequel With The Same Mistakes

Judging by the video, Route 666 seemed to retain that unintentionally comical tone that made the original a cult item for all the wrong reasons. Gameplay revolved around motorcycle combat and driving, with a light strategy addition where you could assign roles to different members of your gang: sniper, medic or brawler.

As detailed in the same thread, a working version of this spin-off has been preserved by Hidden Palace, a site dedicated to archiving prototypes and unreleased builds. Development was reportedly only three months away from completion when it was abruptly cancelled. The exact cause has not been confirmed, but considering Ride to Hell’s status as one of 2013’s biggest flops, the decision comes as no surprise.
