Motorway reopens after car fire and multi-vehicle crash

The M2 was closed this afternoon following a car fire and a multi-vehicle crash, leading to long delays.

Pictures show the blaze at Junction 1, Strood, which has led to the carriageway being shut.

Two fire engines were sent to Junction 1 at just before 11.40am and left the scene around an hour later.

No injuries were reported and the Fire Service believe the cause to be accidental.

There has also been a diesel spillage, according to traffic information service Inrix.

A multi-vehicle accident between Junction 4, Gillingham and Junction 5, Sittingbourne, has also impacted traffic.

At 1.30pm, National Highways posted on X, saying there were delays of around an hour and that congestion stretched back for four miles due to one lane being closed.

This was after the road was fully blocked.

A further update at 2.10pm confirmed the lane had reopened and that there were “no significant” delays.

KentOnline has contacted the police for further information.
