‘Sources at Tottenham confirm’ talks with Atletico Madrid over Cristian Romero

We have certainly not heard the last of the speculation linking Tottenham’s Cristian Romero with a move to Atletico Madrid, with an Argentine journalist now claiming that the La Liga club continue to be locked in negotiations with Spurs for the centre-back.

Most Tottenham fans are understandably already tired of the Romero transfer saga, as there has been non-stop speculation linking him with a move to the Metropolitano Stadium for the past several months.

Claims earlier this week that Atletico have agreed a fee for Romero have been denied, but we have certainly not heard the last of the rumours.

According to Alasdair Gold, Tottenham are determined to keep Romero and will only consider selling him for a fee worthy of one of the best centre-backs in the world.

Cristian Romero talks are ongoing between Tottenham and Atletico Madrid

Despite suggestions in the British press that Spurs do not want to lose their vice-captain, Argentine journalist Ruben Uria has now claimed that the Lilywhites are continuing to speak to Atletico about the World Cup winner.

Uria said via Esto Es Atleti: “Sources at Tottenham Hotspur confirm that they are talking to Atlético de Madrid about Cuti Romero. Confirmed.”

Reports over the last few weeks have indicated that Tottenham will not lower their £60m asking price for Romero, even though the centre-back has just two years left on his contract.

When asked about Spurs’ asking price for the 27-year-old, Uria responded: “It seems like a lot of money to me, too much.”

How much are Atletico willing to pay for Romero?

A few days ago, AS claimed that Atletico Madrid are not willing to offer more than £51m for Romero, which is around £9 less than what Tottenham are demanding.

That certainly does not seem like an insurmountable gap and the outlet asserted that the La Liga giants have not given up on the centre-back just yet.

Various Spanish publications have continued to assert that Romero is extremely keen on joining Atletico and they suggest that the defender’s desire may work in the favour of Diego Simeone’s side during the negotiations.
