The Nintendo Switch 2 continues to drive growth in hardware.
Projected U.S. total spending on video game hardware, content, and accessories grew 5% to $5.1 billion when compared to a year ago, Circana reports. Year-to-date spending is now at $32.6 billion, 1% behind last year.
Compared to last year, July’s hardware spending grew 21% to $384 million, the highest hardware spending in July since 2008. The rise was driven by Nintendo Switch 2, the best-selling video game hardware in both units and dollars for July and year-to-date. It has surpassed 2 million units sold in the U.S. and is 75% ahead of the unit sales pace set by the original Nintendo Switch.

Content spending increased 4% in July compared to last year, to $4.5 billion, powered by mobile growth, which saw a 7% increase to $2.3 billion, and non-mobile subscriptions, which saw a 21% increase to $0.5 billion. These upticks offset a 9% decrease in spending on console content.

EA Sports College Football 26 was the No. 1 best-selling premium video game of July, with EA Sports MVP Bundle coming in second and Nintendo’s Donkey Kong Bananza ranking third.
Sensor Tower reports the top 10 mobile games in the U.S. by consumer spending in July were: Monopoly Go!, Royal Match, Last War: Survival, Candy Crush Saga, Whiteout Survival, Free Fire, Clash Royale, Kingshot, Township, and Royal Kingdom.
