Hollow Knight: Silksong September Launch Shakes Up Indie Game Schedule – Explosion Network

Hollow Knight: Silksong is set to release on September 4, and it has become theGTA V of indies, with the surprise release date scaring off more than a few other games.

Last week, Team Cherry released a new trailer for Hollow Knight: Silksong along with the announcement of the official release date. The trailer showcases the beautiful new location, teases the apparent over 200 enemies that’ll be in the game, and highlights the epic boss fights. If it’s anything like the original Hollow Knight, this is bound to be one of the biggest games of the year, and definitely one of, if not the biggest, indie releases for 2025. As such, this has sent a few games scuttling either to later September or into October.

Check out the release date trailer for Hollow Knight: Silksong below if you haven’t seen that one yet.

Devolver Digital has moved the release date of Baby Steps from just a few days after Hollow Knight: Silksong to September 24, announcing the news in the funny video below.

Ysbyrd Games, the publisher of Demonschool, announced that the game will move from September 4 to November 20, saying in a press release:

“With 11 years under our belt as an indie publisher, we at Ysbryd Games are reasonably qualified to say that any point of 2025, on balance, has been or will be as brutal as market conditions can get when it comes to releasing a game. Crueler still, that we should find out with such short notice that Hollow Knight: Silksong will launch just one day after our planned release for Demonschool.”

Aeternum Game Studios has announced that Aeterna Lucis has been delayed out of September and will now release in 2026, saying in a press release:

“Our initial plan was to launch it this September, but after the announcement of Silksong, we are fully aware that our game wouldn’t have the visibility it deserves […] The game is already finished, and we will use this additional time to keep polishing it, refining every detail, and making sure it delivers the perfect experience our community deserves.”

Clover Pit announced they’d delayed their game to September 27, now, saying:

“The release date for Silksong was announced yesterday, and it’s only one day after CloverPit, our original launch date. Silksong is the most anticipated and wishlisted game on all of Steam, and we think people will love this game and play it right at launch (including us), but that also means it will overshadow all games launching close to it. So if we stick to our original dat,e we would risk the launch of CloverPit a fair bit.”

And finally, Stomp and the Sword of Miracles have even delayed their demo because they’re afraid it wouldn’t get a look-in with Silksong around, and have pushed back their demo from September 12 to an unannounced date.

“Trying to make an indie game is already really, really hard […] In the case of Silksong, however, I feel like a little krill trying not to get eaten by a blue whale.”
