It has been one of the big surprises of the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake. Snake’s nightmare level, which disappeared from all subsequent reissues of the original game, has been brought back to life by Platinum Games. This is a double win. On the one hand, this level was a hack-and-slash mini-game that had little to do with the rest of the game, but the creators of Bayonetta, now immersed in Ninja Gaiden 4, know a thing or two about the genre. On the other hand, this isn’t the first time the studio has worked on Kojima’s saga. Who do you think was responsible for delighting us with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance? Exactly. There was no one better to resurrect Guy Savage.
What is Guy Savage?
Guy Savage was one of the many Easter eggs hidden in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. An action stage that we could only access after being tortured and imprisoned in Groznyj Grad. If we saved the game at that point, Para-Medic would start talking to us about Dracula and his servant Renfield, and if we exited the game at that precise moment, the level would automatically activate when we returned to play.
Developed by Shuyo Murata, Kojima’s regular screenwriter, Guy Savage had us fighting hordes and hordes of monsters in a setting that some saw as a warehouse and others, given the police uniforms worn by the creatures, as a prison. Whatever it was, it was a nightmare that only ended if we defeated all the zombies, if we died, or if we survived for 5 minutes.
Kojima, who spent many years pretending that Guy Savage was a figment of our imagination, finally admitted that they had initially thought of including a nod to Gradius, another of Konami’s illustrious sagas, in this dreamlike way, but then decided to take advantage of it to do something new. Murata’s level was a kind of demo and pitch to see if the company wanted to transform his universe into a standalone game. However, the project never got the green light.
In the acclaimed Metal Gear Solid Delta, you can enter the level in the original way (the most recommended, as it includes the entertaining pre- and post-battle codec conversations) or through the main menu once you have completed the game. It has been rebuilt from scratch, and instead of fighting monsters in a warehouse, you now fight vampires in a cemetery under the light of a huge red moon.

What if we were facing another pitch? Is there hope for a remaster or remake of Metal Gear Rising by Platinum? Why did they choose this particular design, halfway between Castlevania and Bloodborne? Questions and more questions, and a growing desire for this to be more than just a nod to the past and for it to be replicated in the future. What if they gave us the next installment of the Belmont clan as a gift?
