‘Are we boring you?’: Woman yawns as she’s sentenced for attack on policeman

A drunk woman who kicked and spat at a police officer yawned loudly in the dock as her punishment was read out.

Tina Phillips was arrested after emergency services were called to High Street, Chatham, to reports that two women were acting in a disorderly manner.

As efforts were made to arrest one of them, Phillips, 38, started shouting and kicking off. She spat at one officer and, as a struggle ensued, kicked one in the chest.

Phillips of Ryde Close, Chatham, admitted assaulting an emergency worker, obstructing police, and being drunk and disorderly, after the incident which happened on September 1 last year.

She was due to be sentenced earlier this month, but failed to show up for her court hearing.

A warrant was issued for her arrest, and she was hauled before magistrates in Medway on August 19 to learn her fate.

While in the dock, she also admitted failing to surrender to custody after her no-show at court the week before.

James Nichols, prosecuting, told the court: “She was getting in the officer’s face and then tried to spit on him, and during a struggle to arrest her, she kicked out and hit the officer on the chest.

“She was sent to prison in November last year for similar offences, and she’s still on post-sentence supervision.

“However, these offences predate that custodial sentence.”

Hamza Adesanu, defending, told the court his client had simply forgotten the date of her hearing.

He added: “She’s pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and was intoxicated.

“A number of her (past) offences are of the same nature, same circumstances. For the past three or four years, this has been her life, she needs help, and she knows it now.

“She’s got new accommodation in a shared house and is getting some stability and is now only drinking four cans a day.”

Magistrates placed her on an 18-month community order, which will see her complete an alcohol treatment requirement for six months, attend 25 rehabilitation sessions and complete a first steps change course.

She was also fined £50, but that was deemed paid for the time she’d spent in custody.

She was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £114, £85 in court costs and £50 compensation to the officer. It was at this point Phillips yawned loudly while still in the dock.

The chairman of the bench then said to her, “Are we boring you?”
