Despite the efforts of paramedics, a two-year-old child was confirmed dead at the scene.

His next of kin has been informed.

A man also suffered serious injuries following the incident and was taken to hospital.

Police say a man in his 20s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He remains in custody while inquiries continue.

“My granddaughter said she could see a car had gone through the barrier…”

Officers are now appealing for witnesses, including bus passengers who have not yet spoken to police, to come forward.

They are also urging anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam footage to get in touch.

The crash happened close to the Gorrell Tank car park, where people reported seeing a vehicle go through barriers on Saturday evening.

A witness told KentOnline how the incident was “very serious and very sad”.

“A nice young man approached us and advised us not to take the children to where we had parked as something had happened,” she said.

“My granddaughter said she could see a car had gone through the barrier.

“And when my husband came back with the car, he said lots of people were crying.”

The fire service confirmed it sent three fire engines to the crash, while Canterbury City Council – which manages the car park – said its thoughts were with everyone affected.

The site was reopened this morning, with council staff on hand to offer support.

Witnesses, including passengers travelling on the bus who have not yet spoken to police, should call 01622 798538 or email sciu.td@kent.pnn.police.uk, quoting reference BN/AL/058/25.

Relevant CCTV and dashcam footage can be uploaded via the online portal.
