Two sportsbooks this week will get the first two gaming licenses to operate in Missouri.
The Missouri Gaming Commission heard arguments Wednesday from three companies – DraftKings, FanDuel, and Circa – which are vying for the two “untethered” licenses. An untethered license refers to sportsbooks not affiliated with a casino or a professional sports team.
KMOX Radio’s Michael Calhoun spoke with Ryan Butler, a reporter for the gaming publication “Covers” about the process.
“So if you don’t get one of the untethered licenses, you basically have to have a physical presence,” Calhoun said. “Now, if you’re like, you know, Penn or Caesars, you’ve already got a casino. So that seems to be pretty easy. Otherwise, (you would have to) partner with like the Cardinals for Ballpark village, or if you don’t get the untethered, you (have to) figure out some way to have a physical presence then.”
“Exactly,” Butler responded. “That’s the biggest difference, is that it’s just kind of annoying.”
Butler said the commissioners are considering, in part, how FanDuel, DraftKings, and Circa plan to market themselves.
The Missouri Gaming Commission is scheduled to award the two untethered licenses on Friday. Legal sports betting begins in Missouri on December 1st.
