Loud ‘explosion’ heard as driver flees after ‘crashing car into tree’

A car crashed into a tree and caught fire before its driver fled the scene as villagers reported hearing an “explosion sound”.

Emergency services were scrambled to the incident in Southfleet Road, Bean, near the entrance to Beacon Wood Country Park, last night (June 30).

The crash and resulting blaze had caused concerns among villagers who reported online an “explosion sound” and sounds like “gas tanks exploding”.

Another worried resident added: “Anyone hearing loud bang over by the school lane that way? Four times now.”

Officers and fire crews confirmed to KentOnline their attendance shortly before 9pm with paramedics also at the scene.

Four fire engines attended and crews used hose reels and foam to bring the fire under control.

Police say the driver had left before their arrival and enquiries are ongoing to find them.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Two passengers attended a local hospital for medical attention.”

Their injuries are not thought to be serious.

The blaze was fully out by around 10.10pm. The cause is not yet known.
