Brennan Johnson reacts to Morgan Gibbs-White’s transfer saga with Tottenham

Brennan Johnson has commented on whether he spoke to his old teammate during Tottenham Hotspur’s failed pursuit of Morgan Gibbs-White.

Tottenham Hotspur appeared close to securing the signing of Morgan Gibbs-White just a few weeks ago, with the north London club prepared to trigger the midfielder’s £60million release clause.

A medical was reportedly scheduled within 24 hours, as Spurs geared up for a massive spending spree totalling £105million in the space of two days.

However, the move ultimately collapsed when Nottingham Forest decided to pursue legal action against Tottenham, claiming the club had approached Gibbs-White illegally, forcing the transfer to a grinding halt.

Brennan Johnson reveals if he talked to Morgan Gibbs-White during Tottenham transfer saga

Eventually, the deal failed to materialise, and Morgan Gibbs-White remained at Nottingham Forest, putting pen to paper on a contract extension that now keeps him at the City Ground until 2028.

Now, Brennan Johnson has offered some insight into the saga. Speaking to football.london, the Tottenham forward reflected on the situation and whether he communicated with his old friend and former teammate at Forest.

Johnson revealed that he opted not to reach out during the frenzy, knowing how intense the speculation had become. “I have not because I knew his phone would be all over the place. I did not want to put more pressure on him or anything,” he explained. “Morgan is a great guy. We got on really well and I wish him all the best.”

Spurs forward Brennan Johnson on Heung-min Son’s exit and what he learned

While Tottenham missed out on their preferred number ten target, the club are now preparing for life without their skipper. Heung-min Son confirmed during pre-season that he would be leaving N17 after a decade at the club.

Johnson, who shares a strong bond with Son, paid tribute to the South Korean icon after scoring in the club’s pre-season friendly against Newcastle in Seoul. Knowing it was Son’s farewell appearance, Johnson celebrated by mimicking the forward’s trademark celebration.

For Johnson, beyond friendship, Son was a mentor on and off the pitch. “I learned loads of things. How he is as a person. How professional he is. Also so much on the pitch. He is a great player, so it is impossible to learn everything he does. He does it at such a high level,” he explained.

“His career speaks for itself. How amazing a player he is. Just little things that I can do. He speaks to me a lot. He likes to tell me bits of advice on how I can become better and little things to help me.

“I am a right-footed player who played on the right a lot last season. You know he is both-footed. He helped me with little techniques on how to improve my left foot and be better at that.

“He is an amazing character and personality. A world-class player. I do not think there would be anybody who would say that they would not want to play with him because of how much of an amazing player and personality he is.”
