Daniel Levy defends his decision to sack Ange Postecoglou despite Tottenham trophy

Daniel Levy has explained Tottenham’s decision to replace Ange Postecoglou with Thomas Frank despite the Australian delivering the club’s first trophy in 17 years.

While Spurs fans are now looking forward to the start of the new era under Thomas Frank, they will forever remain thankful to Postecoglou for what he achieved.

The Australian managed to do something that some of the biggest names in world football had failed to do before him: deliver silverware to the long-suffering Spurs fans.

Not all Spurs fans agreed with the decision to sack Postecoglou, with many feeling that he deserved an opportunity to build on the Europa League success.

Daniel Levy explains why Ange Postecoglou was sacked by Tottenham

The Tottenham chairman revealed that the decision was made collectively by the club’s top brass, but he accepted that ultimately, the buck stops with him.

The 63-year-old insisted that he had to take the emotion out of the decision despite the Europa League success, pointing out that Tottenham’s showing in the Premier League last season was simply unacceptable.

Levy said on the decision to sack the Australian on The Overlap: “Ultimately, the decision sits with me, but it’s always a collective decision. We have a board of directors, but under the board, we have a group of technical staff, and they advise. We had to explain the decision to part ways with Ange. Ange just won us a trophy – a European trophy – highly significant, and he’s always going to be in our history.

“However, we couldn’t lose sight of the fact that we finished 17th in the league, we lost 22 Premier League games, and it’s impossible for Tottenham to be in that position, and so we had to take the emotion out of it and we had to give some data points as to why we decided to do what we did.”

Levy admits sacking Postecoglou was not an easy decision

The Tottenham chairman confessed that breaking the news to Postecoglou weeks after he had delivered the club’s first European trophy in 41 years was not an easy thing to do.

However, he insisted that the goal at the club is to compete on all fronts regularly.

When asked about his final conversation with Postecoglou, Levy said: “Whichever level you do it, no one likes telling somebody, ‘You’re losing your job’, but it is the nature of football.

“We’re there to win and yes, we won a European trophy – and it was fantastic – but we also need to win on all fronts – and the Premier League says it all.”
