The LeapMove is an educational gaming device with a camera for playing motion-based games. Pre-loaded with more than twenty games, the LeapMove doesn’t require an internet connection and is pretty affordable.
LeapFrog has announced the LeapMove — a cube-like device that connects to a TV and lets kids learn and get physically active in a fun way. With its integrated camera, LeapMove works like the Xbox Kinect, whereby a person’s body, in this case a child, is the controller.
Pre-loaded with several motion-based educational and fun games, LeapMove is designed for kids between the ages of 4 to 7. The device connects to a TV via HDMI and also has a USB port for power input. It can be mounted on top of a TV or placed underneath it, as long as there’s an unobstructed view of the child.
There are 25 pre-loaded games which teach kids shapes, math, spelling, phonics, and problem-solving skills. There are also games that are simply just for fun but require a child to move their arms and feet. Depending on the game, the child either appears on the screen or controls an avatar. LeapFrog says the LeapMove can store up to three user profiles.
LeapFrog says that the device doesn’t connect to the internet, so there should be no worries about privacy. Nevertheless, there is a camera shutter to cover the lens when it is not in use. The only time it needs to be connected to a PC is when a guardian wants to download more games on to the device using the LeapFrog Connect program.
LeapMove costs just $69.99 which makes it much cheaper than rival devices such as the $249 Nex Playground which also has a monthly subscription. Although with the monthly subscription, users of the Nex Playground unlock a library of games that includes titles based on popular brands such as Barbie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Peppa Pig, How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, and Elmo. There are also new games every month.
Nevertheless, at $69.99 on Amazon and without a subscription, LeapMove already wins in terms of affordability.
