The R36 Ultra is a new gaming handheld, but it definitely doesn’t reinvent this growing category of devices. It comes with an IPS screen, two joysticks and WiFi connectivity. The price is relatively affordable.

The R36 Ultra is a new gaming handheld that has recently become available on Amazon for just under $60. Alternatively, the device is available at lower prices currently starting around $37 on Aliexpress, but those orders ship directly from China and may be subject to additional fees and import taxes, depending on the shipping address.
Be that as it may, the R36 Ultra obviously doesn’t reinvent gaming handhelds. It has a conventional layout where the controls are arranged under the display. Specifically, there are two joysticks, four action buttons and a D-pad. Between the D-pad and action buttons are start and select buttons, as well as a fn button. On the back, there are a total of four shoulder buttons.
The handheld is equipped with an RK3326, which is an ARM SoC with four Cortex-A35 cores. A memory card slot is included as well and makes it easy to store and run games from a microSD card. According to the manufacturer, various platforms can be emulated, including games for Nintendo 64, PlayStation One, PlayStation Portable and older platforms like the NES. Moreover, the handheld features a 4-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 720 x 720 pixels, a 3,000mAh battery and an integrated WiFi module, which is useful for playing multiplayer games.

I have been active as a journalist for over 10 years, most of it in the field of technology. I worked for Tom’s Hardware and ComputerBase, among others, and have been working for Notebookcheck since 2017. My current focus is particularly on mini PCs and single-board computers such as the Raspberry Pi – so in other words, compact systems with a lot of potential. In addition, I have a soft spot for all kinds of wearables, especially smartwatches. My main profession is as a laboratory engineer, which is why neither scientific contexts nor the interpretation of complex measurements are foreign to me.

My fascination for technology goes back a long way to the Pentium II era. Modding, overclocking and treasuring computer hardware has since become an integral part of my life. As a student, I further developed a keen interest in mobile technologies that can make the stressful college life so much easier. After I fell in love with the creation of digital content while working in a marketing position, I now scour the web to bring you the most exciting topics in the world of tech. Outside the office, I’m particularly passionate about motorsports and mountain biking.
