A Kent animal park loved by celebrities has unveiled new accommodation plans overlooking Europe’s largest lion enclosure.
Port Lympne Hotel and Reserve, near Hythe, submitted an application to Folkestone and Hythe District Council (FHDC) for 12 all-weather “luxury” tents in a safari-style overnight experience that bosses say will bring guests closer than ever to its pride of lions.

The new accommodation will be perched on raised platforms offering uninterrupted views of the lions, which include male Hunter, female Oudrika, and their five daughters.
The site, which will be connected via a newly built timber walkway, has been designed to minimise environmental impact while immersing visitors in the heart of the wildlife reserve, bosses say.
Tony Kelly, managing director of Howletts and Port Lympne Estates, said: “I’m incredibly proud to unveil our Lion Lookout plans.
“Nestled alongside the lion habitat, this unique stay will offer guests an extraordinary opportunity to experience the majesty of these incredible animals up close, all while enjoying world-class comfort and design.

“Lion Lookout embodies our commitment to immersive wildlife experiences that support conservation and inspire a deep connection to nature.”
The tents will include raised verandas and private viewing areas over the enclosure, with the structure tucked among the trees to avoid negatively impacting the site’s landscape.
Bosses added the latest accommodation plans would be a great addition to the unique stays already on offer, with the site attracting 82,000 overnight guests last year.
It’s also part of the park’s wider ambition to cement its reputation as the UK’s leading ethical safari staycation destination.

Earlier this year, Port Lympne received approval to convert an old safari truck to provide a new form of luxury accommodation.
The truck will feature a lounge area, which will include a minibar, TV and sink. Guests will travel around on it for their private tour of the park’s safari.
Later, it will be hooked up to a stationary trailer, which will include the bedrooms and bathroom.
Famous faces such as Alison Hammond, Kelly Brook and Amanda Holden have all stayed at Port Lympne over the years.
A decision on Lion Lookout is expected by FHDC later this year and, if approved, it’s hoped construction will be underway in late 2026.
