WB Games is Apparently Working on Yet Another Live-Service Title

In some situations, one can’t help but recall the timeless wisdom of Vaas from Far Cry 3 about what the definition of insanity is, and this is most certainly one such situation.

After losing hundreds of millions on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, shutting down MultiVersus, canceling the Wonder Woman game, closing Monolith, the studio behind Middle-earth, F.E.A.R., and the Nemesis System, and being in a dire financial situation altogether, Warner Bros. Games is still doubling down on live-service titles, with another one reportedly in the works.

According to the studio’s recent job posting, they’re now seeking an Executive Producer to work on a “AAA game based on one of the iconic IPs from the vast Warner Bros. and DC Comics catalog,” confirming that the project is connected to their Batman games.

While it’s no news that WB Games is developing a new Batman title – though it remains unclear whether the rumored game at WB Games Montréal, the one Rocksteady is working on, and this project are one and the same – and the decision to focus on the DC Comics universe is perfectly in line with the studio’s previously stated strategy, one fly in the ointment lies in the job’s list of responsibilities, which includes overseeing “post-launch content and live service strategy” as one of the main tasks.

With the studio’s reputation marred by Kill the Justice League and negative sentiment toward live-service games in the gaming community continuing to grow, it certainly comes as a surprise that a studio already in trouble would risk investing in yet another DC Comics-themed multiplayer title.

One plausible theory is that the game was conceived during the peak of Marvel Rivals’ popularity – one of the few live-service games in recent years to receive near-universal acclaim – and was envisioned as a DC version of a similar concept, however, with the weight of their last two multiplayer titles failing spectacularly – and assuming this theory is true, of course – it seems improbable that Warner Bros. could replicate NetEase’s success.

And what do you think about WB Games developing one more live-service title? Will the third time be the charm, or will the new project join SSKtJL and MultiVersus in a video game cemetery? Let us know in the comments!
