Over the decades there have been countless Dungeons & Dragons video games across almost every console and computer imaginable. Two beloved classics, however are getting resurrected over 20 years after their initial release. Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard (a real-time strategy game from 2005) and Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone (a third-person brawler from 2004) are both being re-released on Steam in August 2025.
The updates are courtesy of SNEG, a small, boutique publisher that specializes in restoring popular games from the early 2000s. The new version of Dragonshard and Demon Stone also include some much needed UX overhauls, along with technical tweaks that allow them operate on today’s PCs.
So are these blasts from D&D’s past worth picking up? Below, we plug into all the details.

What is “Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard” about?
Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard is a real-time strategy game originally developed by Liquid Entertainment and published by Atari back in 2005 exclusively for Windows PCs. Set in the world of Eberron, players control one of three distinct factions: the heroic Order of the Flame, the vicious Lizardfolk or the shadowy Umbragen. The game shifts between strategic battles above ground with players also able to explore a variety of dungeons below ground. Notably, it’s considered the first D&D video game where RTS is the primary focus. The story was also written by Eberron creator Keith Baker.
The enhanced Steam version coming in August 2005, updates the original game with a number quality-of-life features, including improved resolution, enhanced save features, new localization options and better overall compatibility with current PCs.

What is “Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone” about?
Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone is a third-person action RPG developed by Stormfront Studios and originally published by Atari in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Windows PC. Players can switch between three heroes: Rannek the Fighter, Illius the Sorcerer and Zhai the Rogue, with gameplay is focused on stringing together combinations using melee and ranged attacks. The story itself is in the Sword Coast region of the land of Faerûn and was written by R.A Salvatore (creator of the dark elf ranger Drizzt Do’Urden) and includes voice acting by Sir Patrick Stewart.
The new Steam release coming in August 2025 includes a new enhanced graphics, full controller support and improved audio and menu settings.

What other D&D Video Games Are in the Works?
While the re-release of Dragonshard and Demon Stone are a nod to old school D&D video games, there are also a number of new projects in the works, including:
- Untitled D&D surival sim: In development from Gameloft Montreal, the studio best known for the popular Disney Dreamlight Valley, this new D&D title will be an action-focused survival-life sim set in the Forgotten Realms.
- Project Baxter: In development from Starbreeze Enterainment, who are best known for their shooter Payday 3, little has been revealed about this upcoming D&D game (code named “Project Baxter”) other than that it is a co-operative multiplayer game and slated for release in 2026 for consoles and PC.
- Baldur’s Gate 4: Larian Studios has confirmed that they will not be working on a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3. Hasbro, however, is unlikely to let the lucrative franchise die and chances are good we’ll see a Baldur’s Gate 4 in the future from another developer.
- Untitled Hasbro Game: Wizards of the Coast has also indicated that an in-house studio at Hasbro is currently developing a currently unnamed D&D game, although little information has been revealed about what it will consist of.
- Untitled Saber Interactive game: The developers of the popular Space Marine 2 video game are also working on a new Hasbro title that may be D&D related.
- Untitled Giant Skull Game: The new game studio (which was founded in 2023 by several video game veterans) is working on a single-player action adventure title using the Dungeons & Dragons license.
- Battlemarked: is an upcoming co-op virtual reality RPG game set in the world of D&D. The game is built using the Demeo Action Role Playing System, which involves tactical turn-based combat for up to four players.
