A new report has shed light on who is expected to take over the captain’s armband at Tottenham if Heung-min Son departs this summer.
Over the last week, some sources have claimed that Tottenham’s pre-season tour of Asia could be a farewell tour for Heung-min Son, whose future remains up in the air.
In the last few days, Los Angeles FC have made an offer to sign the Spurs captain, with the MLS club keen to secure the 33-year-old ahead of the start of the Premier League season.
According to some outlets, Son is now increasingly likely to leave Tottenham this summer as the forward considers his future.
Who will replace Heung-min Son as Tottenham captain?
Last week, Thomas Frank admitted that he has not chosen his Spurs captain yet, but according to The Daily Mail, there is a clear favourite.
The report asserts that Cristian Romero will be the leading contender to take the armband if Son is sold to LAFC.
The outlet backs up claims that Atletico Madrid’s interest in the Argentine star has now cooled after the La Liga club’s unwillingness to meet Tottenham’s asking price of £60m.
In his press conference last week, Frank refused to entertain questions about Romero potentially departing Spurs this summer.
Why Spurs may get a new captain even if Son stays
It is not a foregone conclusion that the South Korean is leaving Tottenham, with some reports claiming Son could decide to stay at Spurs until January and reassess the situation in the winter.
However, one thing that appears clear from Frank’s comments on Son’s future is that the forward is not likely to be a guaranteed starter even if he stays.
As a result, one would expect the Danish coach to name a new captain, but the World Cup winner might not be his first pick, given that Romero is reportedly hesitant to sign a new contract at Spurs.
