Recently, Western credit card companies have come under fire for refusing payments for legal adult content, particularly in gaming and manga. Many people have voiced their concern and called out those companies, including game developers.
NieR director has spoken on the matter, stating that this inhibits freedom of speech, and payment processors shouldn’t be the ones deciding on these kinds of things. This happened after Manga Library Z shut down for similar reasons.
Why it matters: There are laws in place to determine what is legal and what isn’t, so credit card payment processors shouldn’t be the ones making these decisions, as authorities are responsible for it.
Taking to X, Yoko Taro, the legendary name behind NieR, voiced his concern on credit card payments. He said this isn’t just something that hinders freedom of expression or content regulations, it is a threat to democracy.
Taro said that regulations are in place for publishing, but it becomes alarming when payment processors start deciding this. If payment processors are controlled, it could even be used for speech control in other countries.
Fans seem to agree with Taro and are against the policy. The recent Manga Library Z, a manga preservation company that had been active for over 14 years, was shut down for the same reason.
Nonetheless, fans and developers are disappointed by this move, and it needs to be reconsidered. Lollipop Chainsaw also announced the new title won’t have censorship, and fans are thrilled with it. This shows what the people want.
