Man denies knowing asylum seeker was in car boot

A man has denied knowing that an asylum seeker was in his boot as he returned to Britain via the Eurotunnel terminal.

Riza Cam says he was unaware that Tolgay Gunesten, who is thought to be a Turkish national, was in his car when he was pulled over by immigration officers at the site in Folkestone.

The 56-year-old, who has lived in this country for 30 years and is a Turkish citizen himself, is set to stand trial over the matter.

He was stopped in his vehicle at the UK control zone at the Eurotunnel Terminal on December 20, 2023.

Cam, of Beaconsfield Road, Enfield, was later charged with carrying out an act to facilitate the commission of a breach of UK immigration law.

He denied the allegation when he appeared before Magistrates in Folkestone on July 22.

Neil Sweeney, prosecuting, said the case was not suitable to be heard in the lower court.

Magistrates agreed and sent the case to Canterbury Crown Court. Cam is expected to appear there for a preliminary hearing on August 26.

He was granted bail until then.
