The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board approved a pair of fines against two commonwealth operators for violations presented by its Office of Enforcement Counsel, a new PGCB release relayed.

Key takeaways

  • FanDuel operator Betfair Interactive was fined $40,000 for failing to properly license employees, while Rivers Philadelphia operator Sugarhouse HSP Gaming received a $30,000 fine for underage gambling violations.
  • Seven individuals were placed on the PGCB’s Involuntary Exclusion List, including a patron who left two minors unattended for hours while gambling.
  • Despite enforcement actions, Pennsylvania sportsbooks reported a 51.8% year-over-year June profit increase, capping off a remarkable $8.7 billion fiscal year in wagers.

Per the release, Betfair Interactive, doing business in the state as FanDuel, was fined $40,000 for failures to license multiple employees. Additionally, Sugarhouse HSP Gaming, the Rivers Philadelphia Casino operator, was fined $30,000 for two violations letting individuals under the legal age access the gaming floor for gambling purposes.

In addition to the fines against the two operators, the PGCB also placed more than half a dozen individuals on its Involuntary Exclusion Lists, which ensures these people may not gamble either in-person at any statewide casino, any regulated online betting site, or any Video Gaming Terminal location, per the release.

“Actions such as these to deny statewide gambling privileges serve as a reminder that adults are prohibited from leaving minors unattended in the parking lot or garage, a hotel, or other venues at a casino since it creates a potentially unsafe and dangerous environment for the children,” the PGCB Wednesday release outlined. “To complement the efforts by casinos to mitigate this issue, the Board created an awareness campaign, “Don’t Gamble with Kids.”

According to the release, one patron left two minors aged eight and nine in their hotel room for almost eight hours in order to gamble at table games.

The Board placed two others on the Involuntary Gaming Exclusion List for fraudulent actions involving online gambling.

Pennsylvania sportsbooks on the rise

While Pennsylvania’s gaming control board continues to enforce penalties, Pennsylvania sports betting remains as strong as ever, coming off an incredible year-over-year increase last month.

According to the organization’s latest reporting, online and retail sportsbooks generated $66.8 million in profits, a dramatic 51.8% year-over-year rise, and an even bigger 71.4% taxable revenue increase.

June was also the Keystone State’s 2024-25 fiscal year end, with sports betting generating over $8.7 billion in wagers and more than 95% of that from online sportsbooks.
