Lego has opened pre-orders for a 1:1 replica of the original Game Boy. Available to order now, the Lego Game Boy retails for less than $60 with 421 pieces included in the box.
Lego has announced a new Nintendo tie-in having already released various Legend of Zelda and Super Mario-themed building sets in the last few years. This time, Lego has turned its attention to the original Game Boy that launched in 1989.
As Lego’s promotional materials show, the Lego Game Boy contains great attention to detail with bricks that accurately represent the original handheld’s curves and recessed switches. Not only that, but the new set is a 1:1 replica of the original Game Boy, complete with A/B buttons and a d-pad. Please note that all the lettering are stickers that must be applied rather than printed onto their bricks themselves.
Moreover, the Lego Game Boy cannot play real Game Boy cartridges. Instead, Lego advertises the set as a collector’s item or a decorative object for which the company includes a presentation stand. Incidentally, Lego also includes a choice of three lenticular screens with two relating to the Game Pak cartridges that one can build too.
The Lego Game Boy can be ordered from today for $59.99 in the US either from Amazon or from Lego directly. However, Lego will not begin shipping pre-orders until October 1. Please see Lego’s website for more details.
