Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Lead Actor Charlie Cox Promises to Play his First Video Game in Almost 30 Years

Charlie Cox is an actor known best for his long-term role as the lead of Daredevil, and later Daredevil Born: Again. Cox has spent several seasons of television, a couple of cameos, and around ten years of his life attached to the Man Without Fear. While Daredevil himself has had little luck in the video game department, Cox made his first foray into voiceover earlier this year. With his role as Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Charlie Cox has now made a name as the lead of one of the best RPGs of the year. However, Cox’s general cluelessness about the whole affair has been an absolute delight to watch.

Charlie Cox first made the news after admitting he felt “like a total fraud” after receiving so much recognition for his role in Clair Obscur. After all, the overwhelming positive press around his performance somewhat overshadowed those of his colleagues. Colleagues which, as Cox seems to be self-conscious about, have dedicated much more time to voiceover than he has. More recently, the charming actor seems determined to correct the record of his own inexperience with video games.

Charlie Cox’s Last Video Game Turns 30 Next Year

More recently, Charlie Cox has been attending fan events for Clair Obscur and other projects. At Q&As and such, the topic of Cox’s gaming habits (or rather, the lack thereof) have been a consistent topic of discussion. Cox has been consistently caught off guard by the impact that his work has had already, and the dedication shown by fans who are surprised to learn his detachment from his own work. Now, Cox seems determined to “do right” by such fans.

During a Q&A with Charlie Cox at Galaxy Con, the subject came up yet again. As first reported by EuroGamer, Cox cheekily remarked that “They’ve come a long way since Mario 64, which is probably the last computer game that I played.” We’re going to go ahead and forgive Charlie’s mislabeling of Super Mario 64 as a computer game. Sometimes it’s the thought.

And Cox seems to have thought a lot on the subject. Later in the same session, Cox seemed a bit bashful at being unable to thoroughly answer some fans’ questions. Cox insisted that he plans on finally playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33–As soon as he gets his hands on a console of his own. This seems motivated primarily by Cox’s desire to better understand the immense appreciation his fans have shown him, which is certainly a sentiment worth commending.

What’s Next for Charlie Cox?

If the talent on display in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is any indication, hopefully Charlie Cox isn’t done with the wide world of video games just yet. One might have worried that he was heading that way, after his persistent disinterest in the medium as a whole. However, his new commitment to play through his own game means that Charlie Cox isn’t ready to give up on video games just yet.

Charlie Cox has yet to announce any upcoming video game roles, but Clair Obscur definitely put him on the radar of several developers. It’s therefore only a matter of time before someone snags Cox up next, and someone very well may have already. Clair Obscur itself has already received plenty of buzz as one of the best RPGs of 2025; and taking home a prize for Clair Obscur at The Game Awards seems like the perfect conclusion to the saga of Charlie Cox’s Impostor Syndrome.
