Assassin’s Creed Shadows Players Surpass 5 Million, Update this Week

Ubisoft has revealed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows has surpassed 5 million players. While this is a good milestone for the game, it is important to note the terminology used here. When a game studio uses “players,” that does not equate to the number of “sales” that the game has. Because Ubisoft+ gives players a chance to play the game for a subscription price, that doesn’t mean 5 million people have bought the game. Regardless, that is a lot of people playing the newest game and the Ubisoft earnings report says the game performed within expectations.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows started out as one of the highest selling games of 2025 after it was released, and according to Circana’s Mat Piscatella, remains in the top three. That page shows that only Monster Hunter: Wilds and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered have sold more this year so far. Here is the full top 10 list from Circana:

  1. Monster Hunter: Wilds
  2. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered
  3. Assassin’s Creed Shadows
  4. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
  5. MLB The Show 26
  6. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II
  7. WWE 2K25
  8. Split Fiction
  9. NBA 2K25
  10. Sid Meier’s: Civilization VII

What Does the Assassin’s Creed Shadows Player Count Mean for the Future?

While the big news coming out of the Ubisoft post is the Assassin’s Creed Shadows player count, there was an additional blurb that an update was coming this week for the game. While players are waiting for the biggest Claws of Awaji expansion, that isn’t set to come out until later in the year. This week will likely see a new small story drop and maybe the awaited New Game+ mode. The earnings report that is linked above did also say that the Claws of Awaji expansion will add about 10 hours worth of content to the game, but didn’t go deeper into what players could expect outside of a new weapon and skills.

As of this writing, it’s a bit too early to say if Assassin’s Creed Shadows will get additional expansions beyond Claws of Awaji. The smaller story drops and modes are a nice way to get the single player game going for now. We know that Assassin’s Creed Hexe is currently in the works, but that’s not expected to be out until 2027. There are rumors of an Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake, but we don’t think that release would prevent Shadows from getting more content in the future.
