Millions of players are kicking off their weekend with the New York Times’ popular Connections brainteaser, but some may need a helping hand.
NYT’s puzzle testers rated today’s game just a 2.8 out of 5 in difficulty but many players didn’t agree as they branded the challenge “tough” and “tricky”. “Quite a tough one today. Purple were leftovers for me, but I was happy that I did work them out before submitting,” one players said.
Another wrote: “Wow, that was NOT easy!” A third added: “Tricky, tricky, tricky!”. It comes as a children’s math puzzle has adults stumped as they struggle with the ‘simple’ answer.Â
For those unfamiliar with NYT connections, the aim of the puzzle game is to figure out the “common threads between words”. The game features 16 words in a 4X4 grid pattern and players need to arrange them into groups of four words that each have some sort of logical connection.
Each of the four categories is color-coded according to its difficulty level. Yellow is the easiest, green is medium, blue is hard and purble is the trickiest. If you’re correct in your guess, the words will vanish before their category and color is revealed.
However, if you’re incorrect it means you will have made a mistake. You can only make up to four mistakes before the game ends. Many found today’s game particularly challenging.
“Oh boy! This was not much fun. It doesn’t happen often that I can’t work out a single group correctly,” one admitted. Another person noted: “This one really tested my old memory box! Once I realized what purple might be, I couldn’t remember the 4th one!”
But a few actually found it easy. One said: “Purple were leftovers. The rest were pretty easy. But if you didn’t grow up or don’t live in the U.S., you might have a difficult time with some of the Americanisms.”
Another boasted: “I’m on a roll. I finished this one in under 5 minutes. Seemed pretty straightforward to me. Funny how difficulty is so subjective in this game. Y’all stay safe.”
