Ubisoft confirmed a new Ghost Recon game with tactical FPS focus

After years of uncertainty, Ubisoft has officially confirmed that a new Ghost Recon game is in development. Revealed during a recent shareholder meeting, CEO Yves Guillemot named the title as one of the studio’s upcoming priorities, while CFO Fredrick Duguet hinted at a major shift: the game will be a first-person shooter, marking a departure from the third-person format used in recent entries.

Codename: Project Ovr; a return to tactical realism

According to Insider Gaming, the game is being developed under the codename Project Ovr and is set during a fictional conflict known as the Naiman War. Players will take control of the Ghosts, an elite squad tasked with infiltrating a war-torn region to uncover a traitor and carry out covert missions.

The gameplay will emphasize:

  • First-person perspective
  • Squad-based tactics
  • Stealth and mission planning
  • Dark, controversial scenarios, including one where a squad nearly shoots a civilian holding a baby mistaken for a bomb

Sources describe the tone as mil-sim inspired, drawing comparisons to Modern Warfare, Ready or Not, and Squad. The game reportedly features a significant graphical leap over previous entries.

Release window and development status

Ubisoft plans to enter internal alpha testing by fall 2025, with a full release targeted for Q4 2026. The game is being treated as a flagship tactical shooter, and its development is considered a top priority within Ubisoft’s roadmap.

While no platforms have been confirmed, it’s expected to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
