Family pay tribute to ‘kind and funny’ Amazon driver killed in tragic level crossing crash

An Amazon delivery driver killed in a tragic level crossing accident has been described as a “great friend” who loved his family.

Brandon Hatcher, from Ashford, died after his vehicle was struck at Bax Crossing in Tonge, near Sittingbourn, at just after 12.45pm on Sunday.

Today the 23-year-old’s family paid tribute to the young dad, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

They said: “Brandon was a dad, partner, son, brother, grandson and uncle, amongst being a great friend to many who he came into contact with in his life.

“His family are deeply saddened by his passing at such a tragically young age in an accident that could have been so easily avoided.

“We hope as a result of this there is learning that stops this sort of tragedy happening again.

“We will remember Brandon for his humour, laid back look on life, his smile and love for his family.”

Friends have also described Brandon as a “kind, funny” person who will be “missed by all”.

Among them is Rob Galkoff, a delivery service partner with Amazon, who said: “One of my fellow business owners in Kent lost a driver over the weekend doing his job in a tragic accident.

“He leaves behind a wife and a small child.

“As a community, we are trying to raise some money for them, so any donations, no matter how small, would go a long way to help his family.

“I know Amazon is also doing lots, but let’s all do what we can, too.”

The fundraiser to support his family has seen more than £11,000 donated already.

Isabelle Harvey wrote: “Having Brandon as a friend was truly a blessing. He was the funniest, kindest, and had the most caring soul.

“Please help us in supporting his young family during this heartbreaking time. He will forever be in our hearts. Rest peacefully.”

Calum Bottlee added: “I just can’t believe you’re actually gone, you’ll be missed by so many.

“Having the pleasure of knowing you and calling you a friend has been a blessing.”

Former colleague Lloyd Bryant described Brandon – who has a young daughter – as “hilarious, loving, and an overall lovely guy”.

He continued: “I’m speechless knowing you’re no longer with us. Your spirit will live on in all of us who had the pleasure of meeting you.

“Fly high, big fella. You’ll forever be in our hearts.”

The JustGiving page was set up by Elena Santandreu Almagro.

In it, she says: “We have recently lost our good friend, Brandon, to a tragic accident.

“Brandon had the biggest heart.

“He was unintentionally funny, caring, and he would have done anything for anyone who needed his help.

“But, most importantly, he was a loving father and the best partner.

“He was a hard-working family man who will be terribly missed.

“Please, help us support his young family through this difficult time.”

Several messages of support have also been left.

Lee Rigden writes: “I only had the pleasure of knowing you for a short period of time, but I’m going to miss that infectious persona and unique way of just making people laugh.”

Phoenix Turnball added: “Genuinely heartbroken.

“The sweetest, most gentle and kind-hearted friend anyone could hope for, always with so much love to give.

“I’ll forever treasure our little memories of knowing you.”

In a statement on Sunday, Amazon said it was working with police as investigations take place.

A spokesman stated: “This is a terrible incident and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the delivery driver’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. We will work with police and the delivery service provider as they investigate.”

On Monday, KentOnline revealed that the crossing – which is operated by the driver opening the gates on foot when a green light shows – had a history of near-misses.

British Transport Police said on Monday: “The incident is not believed to be suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has launched a “preliminary examination” after its inspectors visited the site to gather evidence.
