The multi-award-winning artist has worked on games such as Street Fighter II, Kingdom Hearts, and FINAL FANTASY XV, and is considered one of the greatest composers in the history of the gaming industry
São Paulo, july 17, 2025 – Brasil Game Show announces another attraction for the 2025 edition of the event: Yoko Shimomura, composer of soundtracks for iconic games such as “FINAL FANTASY XV” (2016), “Street Fighter II” (1991), “Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars” (1996) and the titles from the Kingdom Hearts franchise. Yoko will be present on October 10th and 11th, when she will participate in BGS Talks and Meet and Greet sessions, and will be honored by BGS with the Lifetime Achievement Award, an award given to renowned professionals in the global gaming industry.
“Music is key to immersion and emotion in games, with some soundtracks forever shaping players’ memories of their favorite titles,” says Marcelo Tavares, creator and CEO of Brasil Game Show. “Shimomura-san is a legend in the video game industry, winner of the BAFTA Game Awards and of the 2024 GDC Lifetime Achievement Award, and her presence will enrich this year’s BGS.”
35 years of career
Recognized worldwide as one of the leading composers in the video game industry, Yoko Shimomura is responsible for some of the most iconic and moving soundtracks of the last three decades. Her career began at Capcom in the late 1980s, where she gained international prominence with her work on Street Fighter II, including the unforgettable theme for the character Guile. Years later, at Square (now Square Enix), she created remarkable compositions for titles such as Super Mario RPG, Legend of Mana, and Parasite Eve, projects that consolidated her unique style that combines classical, orchestral, and contemporary elements.
Her most acclaimed work came with the Kingdom Hearts series, in which her emotional and cinematic compositions became an essential part of the franchise’s identity. More recently, she was responsible for the soundtrack for FINAL FASNTASY XV, a work that reaffirmed her prestige within one of the most important series in the industry. Shimomura’s music has been performed by orchestras around the world, on tours such as Kingdom Hearts Orchestra – World Tour and Video Games Live, and her participation in BGS 2025 represents a rare and special opportunity for the Brazilian public to celebrate the legacy of a true legend of music in games.
On April 8, 2025, Yoko Shimomura was honored with the BAFTA Fellowship during the 21st BAFTA Games Awards. This is the most prestigious award given by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and recognizes the artist’s exceptional and lasting contributions to the video game industry.
A New Era
BGS 2025 will be held from October 9th to 12th, at Distrito Anhembi, in São Paulo, and marks a new era of the largest gaming fair in the Americas. This year’s event will occupy the five pavilions of the modern space with major advances in the experience of exhibitors and the public. More news about the 16th BGS will be revealed soon.
