Shoplifter tried to leap over railings near pier after ‘raiding petrol station shelves’

A prolific shoplifter who tried to jump off railings near pier in a failed bid to flee police has been jailed just a day after his arrest.

Michael Thompson carried out a string of thefts from the BP petrol station in Maidstone Road, Chatham.

Between May 2 and July 6, the 37-year-old repeatedly stole food and alcohol worth more than £400.

Neighbourhood officers identified Thompson from CCTV footage and a day after his last offence, on Monday (July 14), he was spotted on Chatham High Street.

After being pursued he ran towards Sun Pier and tried to climb over a set of railings near the river before being detained and arrested in Sun Wharf.

In footage of his arrest, released by police, an officer carrying a taser can be heard saying “stay there mate,” to which he replies “I’m jumping”. The officer adds “No you’re not mate, Get in” before Thompson shouts back “get off me”.

Thompson, of Trafalgar Street in Gillingham, was charged with six counts of theft and admitted all offences when he appeared before Medway Magistrates Court the next day.

He was sentenced to 25 weeks in prison, including time for breaching a previous suspended sentence.

He must also pay £442 in compensation.

Inspector Paul Diddams said: “Our neighbourhood officers are committed to identifying and arresting those suspected of persistently targeting our local businesses.

“Anyone brought into custody and charged with multiple offences should expect to be placed immediately before the court.

“This is how we protect our retailers and make Medway safer.”
