On July 15, Nintendo released a new update for Super Mario 3D All-Stars that reportedly improved the compilation’s performance when played on a Switch 2 console. Although Super Mario 3D All-Stars has been delisted from the Nintendo eShop since March 2021, that has not stopped Nintendo from supporting the game for players who obtained a copy.
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a three-game collection that was sold as part of the 35th anniversary of the Super Mario franchise in 2020. The compilation consists of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy, all of which were redesigned for the original Switch console and its controllers, along with a Docked Mode resolution of 1080p. Super Mario 3D All-Stars was available for just six months before its discontinuation in March 2021. Since then, physical copies of Super Mario 3D All-Stars have sold for ridiculous amounts online, with prices starting at approximately $100 as of this writing.

Although Super Mario 3D All-Stars is unobtainable for most gamers, the trilogy continues receiving minor updates that players can download. According to Nintendo’s support site, Super Mario 3D All-Stars version 1.1.3 is now available to download as a free update for the original Switch and Switch 2 consoles. Players must connect to the internet to download and install version 1.1.3, though a Nintendo Switch Online subscription is not necessary.
Although previous updates to Super Mario 3D All-Stars added support for Nintendo 64 Controllers, the latest patch only states that issues concerning performance on the Switch 2 have been addressed. The previous version 1.1.2 update, which launched just before the Switch 2’s release, also made specific adjustments to improve gameplay on Nintendo’s new system.
While Super Mario 3D All-Stars contained the first 3D platforming entries in the Super Mario series, the compilation was criticized for its limited availability window and the exclusion of Super Mario Galaxy 2 from the set. Though Super Mario 3D All-Stars remains delisted from the Nintendo eShop, it remains to be seen if Nintendo will reverse course and bring back Super Mario 3D All-Stars during the Switch 2’s life cycle.
The update to Super Mario 3D All-Stars comes at an interesting time for Nintendo, as rumors surrounding when a new Nintendo Direct will happen continue to make the rounds. Between that and the upcoming 40th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, only time will tell what Nintendo has in store for Super Mario fans throughout the year.
