Skybound Games revealed Monday that Rex Splode has joined the roster for the upcoming 2D tag-fighting game Invincible VS.

Rex Splode is a superpowered human with a cybernetic and chemically altered physiology that allows him to generate explosions, equipped with a prosthetic hand capable of firing projectiles. Splode makes good use of enhancements in the forthcoming brawler as his play style revolves around his exploding projectiles and mobility. The vigilante’s strong projectiles, combined with low/overhead mixups, give players the option to get in their opponent’s face or strategically battle from a distance as a zoner.

Additionally, Rex’s explosives can be used as traps, delaying the detonation and timing it for synergized combos across your time team.

Invincible VS was first shown off at Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase in June. The forthcoming 2D tag-fighting game already boasts a roster including heroes and villains like Omni-Man, Invincible, Atom Eve, Thula, and Bulletproof, with promises of more characters from the critically acclaimed Image comic book to round out the cast.

Polygon previously talked to Mike Willette of Invincible VS developer Quarter Up regarding the game, with the executive producer explaining that the game’s roster, explosive combat, and tag mechanics were crafted with “tournament quality” metrics in mind.

“First and foremost, [we’re] building a tournament-quality, brutal superhuman fighting game with a tag component in it,” said Willette.

“We really wanted to enforce that idea of teams,” Willette added. “As part of our Omni Tag system, when you’re in a combo string, you can hold down one of your assists — we call it an Active Tag — they come in and continue the combo right alongside you. You can do it on the ground, you can do it in the air. We wanted to create a really flexible system where you didn’t have to memorize how many ground bounces or wall bounces or OTGs you had in a combo.”

Invincible VS is scheduled for release in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
