The creator of Phasmophobia is teasing the game’s major Horror 2.0 update, which promises to rework many aspects of the title when it releases sometime in 2026. Half a decade after its initial release in Early Access, Phasmophobia continues to be one of the most popular co-op paranormal horror games on the market, attracting thousands of players daily across PC and console.
Initially developed by a single person, Phasmophobia launched during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and quickly became a go-to for popular streamers, helping the indie title promptly rise to the top of sales charts in 2020 as a viral hit. The title snagged the award for Best Debut Game at The Game Awards 2020, and years after its PC release, Phasmophobia was released on consoles in October 2024. The horror game has now sold over 22 million copies, and development isn’t quite finished, with the title’s creator shining some light on what players can expect when Phasmophobia finally launches into Version 1.0 next year.

Phasmophobia is Apparently the Next Step in My Fitness Journey
The Chronicles Update came in at the right time to facilitate Phasmophobia as the next step in my ongoing fitness journey.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Phasmophobia creator Daniel Knight teased the major Horror 2.0 update, stating that the 2026 patch will be so consequential that it will feel like users are playing an entirely new game. While Knight doesn’t give too much away, he states that the team will be “reworking the entire horror in the game,” and that “everything is going to be changing.” Curiously, the developer won’t be dropping many patch notes for Horror 2.0, instead asking players to simply give the overhauled game a try once the update is live. One of the biggest changes will be made to the horror title’s audio, though how it will be altered remains a mystery. Patches continue to roll out for the indie game, with Phasmophobia‘s July 2025 update adding new recordable video evidence and a slew of helpful fixes.
Phasmophobia Creator Says 2026 Update Is So Major, It Will Feel Like a Whole New Game
While the Horror 2.0 patch and Version 1.0 aren’t coming until 2026, more content is still coming to Phasmophobia in 2025. According to the game’s roadmap, several seasonal events will take place later in the year, with fans of Halloween and the holiday season able to jump in for some particularly terrifying haunts. A rework for Grafton Farmhouse and a new small map will also roll out later in 2025.
Phasmophobia was one of only two horror games to appear on Microsoft’s list of 2024’s best-selling Xbox Games, alongside 7 Days to Die. Following the launch of Version 1.0 next year, the game will be considered complete, though Knight promises that updates will continue, with more maps and fresh content on the way even after Phasmophobia finally leaves Early Access.
