Wimpy to open seventh Kent branch this week

The latest branch of a fast-food chain will open tomorrow – making it the seventh in the county.

Wimpy will open in its new restaurant in Station Road, Birchington-on-Sea and will be the Thanet district’s only franchise.

It is being launched by Adnan Etemi, who already owns sites in Ashford and Sittingbourne.

Found in a former homeware store, the unit has undergone a major refit with a new kitchen and seating for 45 people.

Mr Etemi said: “I know from first-hand experience that we have plenty of Wimpy fans in Kent, and I am thrilled to have been able to expand into a completely new location for us.

“Birchington is a super little seaside resort and, together with my team, I’m looking forward to meeting both local residents and visitors alike.”

The new diner will create eight jobs, and will be open 9am to 9pm, Monday to Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sundays.

Chris Woolfenden, Wimpy general manager, said: “We are delighted to bring Wimpy to Birchington for the first time and have no doubt that the new restaurant will quickly become a popular destination for those looking for great value food, freshly cooked to order and served to the table.”

It will be the seventh branch in the county, with current locations in Ashford, Dartford, Sittingbourne, Tonbridge, Maidstone and Strood.

In September 2023, the company’s Chatham branch closed down.

The Ashford restaurant was also previously closed for two years but finally reopened in May this year.

The chain was the first to serve hamburger-based meals in the UK.

It was founded in Indiana, USA in 1934 but Wimpy did not arrive in this country until 1954 when the first Wimpy Bar opened at Lyon’s Corner House in London.

Today, it has more than 60 restaurants across the UK.
