If you’re looking for a little help with the New York Times’ famed word-search game Strands, you’ve come to the right place.
Strands, which launched in March 2024, is one of the most popular of the publication’s online games, joining classics like Wordle and Spelling Bee. The game requires the player to perform a twist on the classic word search.
Words can be created from linked letters in an up, down, left, right, or diagonal direction. Words can also change direction resulting in different patterns. Every letter in the grid will be part of an answer and there is a theme linking every solution. Each day, people find themsleves desperately trying to figure it out.

The ‘Spanagram’ refers to a special word or phrase that sums up the day’s theme. This word spans the entire grid, either horizontally or vertically.

Strands players often argue that it is more challenging than the other NYT games, due to the very vague hints and no word list. This leaves many frustrated players searching the internet for hints in order to ace the daily puzzle.
Today, July 11, the Strands theme is words that are associated with a style of writing. The Spanagram is horizontal. And if you’re still stuck searching for the spanagram itself, it is Poetry.
