People are being advised to close their windows and doors as a fire has broken out on an industrial estate.
Thick, black smoke is coming from a building on Medway City Estate in Strood.
It started at the Viridor recycling centre in Clipper Close.
Joe Sharpe said he can see the incident from his home in Hoo, but has been told by a friend who works on cranes that the smoke can be seen from as far as Shoreditch in London.
He said: “I woke up to get ready for my day at around 6am, and I went into the garden and could see this smoke up into the sky.
“I instantly thought it would be an industrial fire as there was so much smoke going in the sky, and I hoped everyone would be OK.
“It was quite obvious it was coming from the Medway City Estate.
“It has progressed this morning, and it is getting worse. I have spoken to someone in Strood who has had to shut their windows because the smoke is quite bad.
“It has created a massive shadow across the Medway towns.”
The road is still open, and there are currently four fire engines and a height vehicle on the scene.
Crews are using main jets to extinguish the flames and ground monitors to prevent fire spread.
