The remastered version of The Last Of Us Part 2 has a whole new mode, as well as some unexpected new references to Uncharted.
The Last Of Us Part 2 celebrated its fifth anniversary last month and there’s still no sign that there will ever be a third entry in the series, despite the ongoing success of the HBO show.
Series creator Neil Druckmann recently quit working on the show to focus on video games, but while developer Naughty Dog is known to be developing at least two new single-player games, neither of them are thought to be The Last Of Us Part 3.
Given how The Last Of Us Part 2 ends that could easily be it for the story, but there’s always space for spin-offs, and possibly an entirely separate game with all new characters, but for now fans have a new way of experiencing the existing narrative.
The new update for The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered (so not the original on PlayStation 4) allows you to play through both Ellie and Abby’s stories chronologically, rather than having flashbacks interspersed throughout the story.
This sort of thing is not uncommon with movies, especially when it comes to unofficial fan edits, but it’s unusual for a video game.
No one’s suggesting you should play the game like this if it’s your first time, but it does help to clarify things such as how Ellie got her guitar and to create a parallel between Ellie and Abby working their way through Seattle, that isn’t really evident in the original version of the game.

The update is a substantial one, as Naughty Dog brought in Nixxes, who usually work on PC ports of existing games, to help out and restitch the narrative together.
There’re also new trophies attached to the new mode and two unlockable skins for the roguelike No Return mode, featuring Joel dressed as Nathan Drake from Uncharted 4 and Tommy as Sam Drake from the same game.
Naughty Dog has long made it clear they’re not going to make any more Uncharted games (in fact, there’s been little sign that anyone is) so this is a fairly unique reference for them.
However, as they point out, they’re celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, so there may be more unexpected nods to their history in the future.
Considering they’re the original creators of Crash Bandicoot and Jak And Daxter it’s hard to know how they’re going to reference that via a game as serious as The Last Of Us, but hopefully they’ll figure out something.
