Kent Police officer jailed after getting relatives to take rap for speeding offences

A Kent Police officer has been jailed after persuading relatives to take the rap for two speeding offences he had committed.

Juber Miah, who worked at Medway Police Station, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice after family members claimed they had been driving the car.

The relatives of the 26-year-old even attended speed awareness courses.

But Miah’s lies were uncovered following an internal Kent Police investigation.

He was jailed for eight months at Southwark Crown Court last Wednesday after admitting the charges against him.

Ahead of this sentencing, an accelerated police misconduct hearing on June 18 found the former constable had committed gross misconduct.

Kent Police says he was added to the ‘barred list’ and would have been dismissed without notice, had he still been serving.

A report published following the hearing says Miah received the speeding fines after driving in London on May 10 and 11, 2023.

He then persuaded two relatives to falsely say they had been behind the wheel.

However, an investigation by Kent Police’s Professional Standards Department later proved PC Miah had been driving the vehicle when both offences were committed. He later resigned from the force.

The hearing chaired by Chief Constable Tim Smith at the force’s HQ in Maidstone found his actions amounted to gross misconduct.

“I believe the public will take a very dim view of a police officer who has lied in an official process and subsequently been convicted of two counts of perverting the course of justice as a result,” he said.

“I believe they would only conclude his actions were a very serious breach of the trust placed by the public on police officers and the expectation that police officers act with both honesty and integrity.

“I share this view. The breach of public trust and confidence in policing in this case is high and I therefore assess the harm as high.

“There is no doubt that former PC Miah’s actions have and will bring discredit to the force. I find he has breached the standards of professional behaviour, having acted with discreditable conduct.”

The Chief Constable said he had seen no aggravating factors and added there was “no evidence of remorse” from the former officer.

Kent Police’s head of professional standards Det Ch Supt Jon Armory said all the force’s officers and staff “are held to the highest standards of honesty and integrity”, adding those who fail to meet these expectations “will be held to account”.

“Mr Miah’s conduct fell far below the high standards expected of him by both Kent Police and the general public,” he said.

“His actions serve only to undermine the professionalism and determination displayed by the vast majority of Kent Police officers and staff who serve the communities of Kent.”
