MTSU Launches Esports Degrees to Power Gaming Careers

Murfreesboro, TN – Middle Tennessee State University is making bold moves in the rapidly expanding esports world by launching two new undergraduate concentrations this fall: Esports and Gaming Content Creation, and Esports Coaching. Developed through a cross-campus collaboration, these programs give MTSU students in Murfreesboro a direct path into the high-paying, high-energy realm of competitive video gaming.

Richard Lewis, associate professor and program coordinator, said students will gain practical experience with the MTSU Esports Club and community groups while building the skills needed to succeed in the industry—from content creation to team leadership. Esports careers can include everything from streamers and team coaches to event managers and broadcast producers, with salaries averaging more than $150,000 a year in the U.S., according to ZipRecruiter.

Students will also benefit from access to state-of-the-art facilities like the Level Up Arena in the Student Union and the Gaming Lab in the BAS building, where they can hone their production skills and compete in broadcast-quality environments. The new programs position MTSU as a trailblazer in esports education in Tennessee, equipping students with creative and leadership tools for careers in a global phenomenon that’s only growing faster.
