New PS6 handheld rumour makes it sound identical to the Switch 2

There hasn’t been a proper portable PlayStation console since the Vita (Metro)

The long rumoured portable PS6 will be stealing a trick from the Switch 2, but it’ll also be as strong as a PS5 according to the newest leak.

Officially, there’s almost no real information about the PlayStation 6, aside from it using AMD tech, juar like the next Xbox consoles, and implementing Chat-GPT support.

However, thanks to frequent leaks and rumours, the general consensus is that the PlayStation 6 will come in two different models: a traditional home console variant and a portable handheld device.

It’s always been assumed the latter is influenced by the success of the Nintendo Switch and the latest rumour suggests it will be extremely similar, since it will also use a separate dock to connect to a TV.

The information comes from YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead, who claims to have obtained up-to-date documentation detailing specifications for the PlayStation 6, which also mentions targeting a release window of autumn 2027.

As a reminder, Moore’s Law Is Dead previously leaked the specs for the PS5 Pro before it had been formally announced, which were proven accurate when Sony struck his video off YouTube with a copyright claim.

While previous leaks have claimed that the portable version of the PlayStation 6 will be capable of running PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games, albeit at a lower frame rate and resolution, this new documentation explicitly mentions how the console’s processing speed is different between handheld mode and docked mode.

If you’re curious, it’s apparently about 1.20GHz (gigahertz) in handheld mode and about 1.65GHz in docked mode which are significantly higher than the Switch 2’s own specs – 561MHz (megahertz) in handheld mode and 1,007MHz when docked.

Moore’s Law Is Dead believes this means that while the handheld PlayStation 6 will be less powerful than its home console counterpart, it will run ‘basically like a PlayStation 5 or better’ when it’s docked.

This all makes perfect sense, given the success of the original Switch (with Switch 2 sales only further vindicating Nintendo’s approach) although it’s not clear how close the portable will be in performance to the home console, even when docked.

There’s also some very obvious concerns about how much such a portable would cost, as well as considerations such as battery life and heat output. Frankly, it seems too good to be true, to imagine it’s as powerful, or even more so, than a PlayStation 5 – although it’s perfectly plausible that it could be running the same games with lower performance.

Whatever the case, Sony has definitely expressed an interest in the handheld market, as evidenced by the PlayStation Portal (which doesn’t run games natively but streams them from your PlayStation 5), and insisting it’s ‘committed’ to the handheld space.

It’d also make sense considering Microsoft has jumped on the handheld train too. Aside from promising its own portable devices, it’s partnered with Asus to release the ROG Xbox Ally this October.

Speaking of which, these specs for the PlayStation 6 handheld point to it being more powerful than even the ROG Xbox Ally X (the more powerful variant of Microsoft’s handheld). Which sounds great until you realise that already costs £800…
