Tottenham hold talks to sign Xavi Simons but there is one condition to a fast deal

Tottenham look set to challenge Chelsea for Xavi Simons in what could become a tense late transfer battle, with the north London club desperate to bolster their attacking midfield options before the window closes.

The attacking midfield position in Tottenham Hotspur’s team remains a problem area at the moment, with James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski both sidelined through injury.

Tottenham have looked to find solutions in the transfer market, but nothing has come to fruition as they have continually been met with setbacks in their pursuit of new signings.

Spurs’ attempt to land Morgan Gibbs-White was not successful, with the Englishman opting to remain at Nottingham Forest, while Eberechi Eze and Nico Paz also turned down opportunities to move to N17.

Tottenham rival Chelsea for Xavi Simons

With deadline day fast approaching, The Telegraph are now reporting that Tottenham remain desperate to add a new attacking midfielder to their ranks after missing out on Gibbs-White and Eze.

It is understood that Spurs are holding talks over a pre-deadline bid to rival Chelsea for Simon’s signature, with the club hopeful of landing a creative spark that can slot straight into Thomas Frank’s side.

Simons has been a long-term target for Chelsea this summer, but the Blues are said to be evaluating a move for Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez, which may open the door for Spurs to move to the front of the queue in the race for the RB Leipzig man.

Spurs must act fast to secure Simons deal

Simons has already started the season strongly with RB Leipzig, registering a goal and an assist, and his reputation continues to rise across Europe.

The likelihood, however, is that Spurs will only make an offer if they believe a deal can be concluded swiftly, as any delay would increase the risk of Chelsea hijacking the move and leaving Tottenham empty-handed once more.

It now feels like a situation where Tottenham must be the ones to strike first, given their long-standing interest in Simons, and there is some optimism that the player would be open to a move to north London despite his clear admiration for Chelsea.
