Caput Mortum, the slow-burn horror adventure and first title from publisher Black Lantern Collective, is out now on Steam. Caput Mortum will also see release on consoles at a later date.
Inspired by retro 3D dungeon crawlers and survival horror games such King’s Field and Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Caput Mortum sees players delve into an abandoned alchemist’s tower on an otherwise-scenic coastline in 16th-century France. All the while, they will be uncovering mysteries of the tower’s former occupants, and braving the horrors that beckon them below.
“The game’s core theme is something we’re very passionate about, and it’s been super fun alluding to it through subtle and not-so-subtle means,” said Gabriel B. Dufour, Art Director at WildArts Games. “Another thing that turned out to be a treat was to research alchemy. Every symbol and imagery you see in the game has historical meaning, and most puzzles are based on real-life chemical reactions!”
In Caput Mortum, you’ll need to pay close attention to your surroundings, overcome unique puzzles, and piece together the events that took place within the tower. You need to stay vigilant, as monsters roam the abandoned halls of the tower and won’t hesitate to attack. Use stealth to get past them, fight back, or perhaps do something unorthodox? Just be mindful of your health. There are only so many healing items in the game.
A controller is recommended to enjoy the game to its fullest. In fact, fans of old-school dungeon crawlers might recognize a King’s Field controller settings option, which emulates the button mapping of FromSoftware’s classic 1994 action RPG. There’s also a keyboard-only mode to maintain a feeling of vulnerability, and a keyboard with mouse mode for a more familiar experience.
