Report: The Majority of Top-Played Games Cost $20 or Less

The gaming community’s move away from AAA titles toward AA and indie games, documented by VGI in 2024, continues into 2025, with a recent report showing that most PC gamers prefer lower-priced titles and generally steer clear of expensive releases from major publishers.

As reported by market research firm Ampere Analysis, they analyzed the top 150 Steam titles – excluding Counter-Strike 2 – by average monthly active users (MAU) between January 2024 and June 2025, discovering that the majority, 55% to be exact, of the most played games on the leading PC games platform have an average sales price (ASP) of $20 or less.

AA releases, with an ASP between $30 and $50, also attract a notable share of players, accounting for 18%. Expensive releases, however, are less popular among PC gamers, with only 3% of the top 150 titles having an ASP over $50. In fact, only one game with an average price above $60 appears in the list – Split Fiction, which Ampere reports has an ASP of $61.72, though it must be noted that it sells for just $50 in the US.

Ampere further reported that the average spend per gamer on game content and services fell 12% from Q2 2024 to Q2 2025, with spending on new full games in particular dropping by over $5.50 per gamer. However, this decline is offset by an increase in the total number of gamers compared to the previous year, as well as by a higher share of players who had spent on gaming in the past six months – up 9% year-over-year – and specifically on new full games, which rose 3% YoY.
