Midnight releases for video games used to be commonplace, but the continued popularization of buying games digitally has mostly made them a thing of the past. GameStop has decided to fight back by trying to revive the midnight release for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and if you attend, you’ll get a bonus for being a part of something gaming has mostly left behind.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s GameStop store page has been updated to include details about the midnight launch. Under the bonus offer section, you’ll find everything you need to know if you want to be a part of the event and cash in on the bonus. The bonus is a tote bag, and you will need a pre-ordered copy of the game waiting for you at GameStop if you want one on the night.

The tote bag is double-sided with Legends: Z-A’s cover art on one side, and the Pokemon TCG‘s Mega Evolution key art on the other. Mega Evolution returns to the games in Pokemon Legends: Z-A and that has sent a ripple effect through all of Pokemon. The real TCG, Pokemon TCG Pocket, there are even new Mega Evolution plushes.
Don’t go expecting there to be any Mega Evolution TCG stuff in stock for GameStop’s midnight launch, or ever if my hunt for pre-orders of the next expansion is anything to go by.
Even though the tote bag joins a long list of bonuses you can get for committing to Legends: Z-A early, Pokemon fans don’t seem to be all that impressed. Most of the replies to a Reddit post about the event are from fans who plan on staying at home to play the game rather than trekking out at midnight to pick up their copy. Others who might have been swayed by a better gift have noted the tote bag isn’t a good enough incentive to get them out of the house in the middle of the night.
Perhaps if one of the other pre-order bonuses you can get with Pokemon Legends: Z-A being the midnight launch gift would convince more people to help revive this dormant gaming tradition. If you pre-order the game through the Pokemon Center, you’ll get a Sitting Cuties plush of one of Legends: Z-A’s three starters. Pre-order at Best Buy and you’ll get a very detailed physical version of Lumiose City’s map. Arguably better bonuses, and you don’t need to go out on a cold October night to get them.
With less than two months to go, the hype for Pokemon Legends: Z-A is really starting to build. Mega Victreebel was revealed last week and, against all odds, fans seem to love its design. They’re even warming up to Mega Dragonite after its debut in the anime.
