Sometimes, it’s the simplest ideas that get a big reaction. Case in point: developer/writer Aaron Fox-Lerner (who was part of the writing team for NetEase’s open-world survival game Once Human) recently revealed his short narrative game Hairs, a satirical body horror game that you can play for free via itch.io. Featuring nine possible endings (none of them turning out well, mind you), the narrative adventure leads the player through “uncontrolled bouts of hair growth, shady medical experiments, testosterone-fueled misogyny, and unbearably awkward phone calls.”
Designed for those who enjoyed the likes of Mouthwashing and Disco Elysium, Hairs boasts a variety of player choices, with the nine possible endings lead the player through shady online drug markets, floundering street fights, the indignities of aging, and of course, those phone calls. Per the press release, a typical playthrough will last you 10-20 minutes, but those multiple endings will keep you coming back.
And if you’re keen on checking out Aaron’s other work, you can play his browser-based interactive ghost story Together Forever, which sees you trying to maintain a relationship while a vengeful ghost haunts you.
