What Tottenham sources are saying about the rumoured Piero Hincapie bid

Tottenham sources have now reacted to the reports suggesting that they have launched a big offer to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Piero Hincapie.

Many Spurs fans were pleasantly surprised this morning when it emerged that the Lilywhites had made an offer for the Leverkusen star.

It was claimed by Fabrizio Romano that Tottenham made a loan offer with an obligation to buy for £52m for Hincapie, who had made up his mind to leave the Bay Arena this summer.

However, very soon after that update, The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed that Arsenal had also entered the race for Hincapie after hearing about his availability.

Ornstien said that the Leverkusen star is prioritising a move to the Emirates, and that update left Spurs fans fuming at the prospect of their fierce rivals hijacking another one of their targets, following the Eberechi Eze fiasco.

Tottenham deny any offer for Piero Hincapie

However, subsequently, Alasdair Gold took to social media to claim that Hincapie is not one of Spurs’ priority targets.

The journalist explained that the Lilywhites are prioritising signing a number ten and a winger in the final week of the transfer window.

This has now been backed up by The Mirror, who have revealed that Spurs sources have rubbished the Hincapie links.

The outlet reveals that Tottenham are adamant that, despite the speculation linking the Ecuadorian with a move to N17, they have never made any contract with Leverkusen or shown interest in the player.

Tottenham may not have the funds to pursue Hincapie

It is continuing to be reported that Tottenham would have to pay a club-record fee to sign Savinho, while several sources have said that Spurs are also ready to spend big on a number ten.

That would likely not leave Thomas Frank’s men with much money to spend on a new centre-back, which is why paying over £50m for Hincapie seems like a stretch.

Given the PR damage the Eze transfer saga has done for the Lilywhites, one can understand why they are keen to clear the air on Hincapie.
