A budding tech recycler has turned an Xbox 360 into a fully functional gaming PC build, retrofitting this 20-year-old console with a serious set of modern specs. Now featuring an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D gaming CPU and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 graphics card, this Xbox PC is ready to play modern games, and look pretty stylish doing it.

This PC build might look like it’s straight out of 2005, but it’s definitely fit for 2025. Those powerful AMD and Nvidia components have turned this veteran console into a powerful rig for 1080p gaming that can rival the best of them in our best gaming PC guide, especially as a fully-fledged replacement for a modern Xbox. Power aside, this build is faithful to its roots, with the PC parts fitting neatly inside the Xbox 360 shell.

This build caught my eye in a post on Reddit. User RazQ_ in the r/pcmasterrace subreddit explains that the build was born out of a joke made about replacing their dead Xbox 360 Slim’s components with a fully fledged gaming PC. They used a Dremel and drill, among other tools, to coerce the Xbox’s metal frame and plastic outer shell to fit its components, along with a 3D-printed backplate for the motherboard’s I/O ports.

As you’d expect from an Xbox PC, this build is mostly used in the living room, although it’s apparently portable enough to take on trips over the last year. Foam inserts help to direct the airflow inside the case, with the case’s own grid panels on both sides allowing for air to easily escape. On average, the CPU hits 77°C, with the GPU managing 85°C on a max load.

Along with those AMD and Nvidia components, it also has 32GB of RAM and a 4TB Samsung Pro 990 gaming SSD, along with a “cheap laptop” Wi-Fi card. Meanwhile, the RTX 4060 is a low-profile Gigabyte model, with the builder using a PCIe riser cable to lay it on its side and squeeze it into the chassis.

Interestingly enough, this build only uses a 250W ATX power supply. That’s my one area for concern on this build. Athough RazQ_ explains that the CPU and GPU are both power efficient enough to work without relying on any undervolting, we’ve tested the RTX 4060 alongside the 7800X3D in our own test rig before, and it hit 251W. If I were RazQ_, I’d be looking to upgrade to a better PSU, just to give a bit of breathing room and avoid an unwelcome blowout.

This is a very cool way to recycle an old game console, but it’s fair to say that underneath the deceptive-looking Xbox 360 shell is the product of a lot of hard work to get this rig working as intended. With an RTX 4060 and a 7800X3D inside, however, this gamer and their husband will be enjoying some serious hours playing games for a few years yet.
