The 10 best video games for the rest of 2025 – Reader’s Feature

With most of this year’s new games now having a release date, a reader offers his list of the most exciting, from Hollow Knight: Silksong to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.

I’ve been enjoying the Gamescom coverage this week, which I think everyone agrees has been better than expected. It’s not the last showcase event of the year, but Tokyo Game Show and The Game Awards are too late to really expect anything new to be announced for release this year.

You might get a Nintendo Direct or State of Play that announces a minor game but at this point I doubt even that. So basically, we now know all the games that are going to be released this year, even if some of them don’t have exact release dates yet.

So I’ve drawn up my list of what I’m most interested in. It’s personal, so no EA Sports FC 26 or anything like that, but hopefully you’ll find it interesting. Obviously, there’s no way I’ll be able to get them all, so the next question is which ones do I prioritise and which do I leave till next year…?

1. Metroid Prime 4

These are mostly in order of how interested I am in the games, but it’ll have to wait until I see the reviews before I make a decision. The original Metroid Prime is one of my favourite games ever but it’s barely the same team that made that game anymore, so there’s got to be a bit of scepticism – but only a bit. I really like the way they’re using the new Joy-Cons and the graphics look great, so I’m hoping for the best.

    2. Marvel Cosmic Invasion

I don’t think this has a release date yet either, but I love beat ‘em-ups and I love Marvel so I’m super into this, to the point where I almost don’t care whether it’s good or not (it’s hard to mess up a beat ‘em-up, as long as the graphics are good). I’m not sure about some of the character choices – Captain America and Wolverine but no Adam Warlock or Star-Lord? – but it looks so good I’m already sold.

      3. Hollow Knight: Silksong

4th September – Unlike GC, I’m a big fan of the original Hollow Knight, so I can’t imagine I won’t be getting this. Although I am a bit worried they haven’t said anything about the price yet, which is a bit concerning. I know it’s just more of the same, but the first one is my favourite Metroidvania and my favourite Dark Souls type game, so more of the same is fine by me.

        4. Ghost Of Yōtei

2nd October – The only Sony exclusive this winter, but only getting only one has been the norm for a while now. I loved Ghost Of Tushima, so I’m instantly interested in this. I do worry a little about how different it is but if the reviews check out I’ll definitely be getting it. Probably this year, but this is about as far as my budget can stretch.

          5. Battlefield 6

10th October – Well, maybe I can fit this in if I get it for a Christmas present (why does my birthday have to be in February?!) because I do like my online shooters and this year it’s a real choice between this and the new Call Of Duty. At the moment the hype is telling me Battlefield is the better choice but maybe it’s best to wait anyway, so I can see which one comes out on top.

            6. Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7

14th November – I’ll be controversial here and say I think that this looks perfect good, like one of the stronger entries in the last few years. Weirdly, I think it’s just because it’s the second Black Ops in a row that it’s getting quite a bit of criticism, but the Black Ops games can be in quite different time frames so I’m not sure that’s going to be a problem. I would not get this and Battlefield though, so it is going to be a choice.

              7. Borderlands 4

12th September – One option might be to leave Battlefield and Call Of Duty to next year and jump in with this instead. Borderlands is another game that gets a lot of criticism online, but I’ve always had fun with it and since this one seems to be finally getting a proper open world I’m pretty into the idea of it. It might depend on if I can convince a friend to get it too though, for the co-op.

                8. Silent Hill f

25th September – As well as online shooters I really like my horror games and we seem to be eating well at the moment, especially with the positive reaction to Resident Evil Requiem. The Silent Hill 2 remake was great, so I’m hoping this will be too. It’s out surprisingly soon but I hate to say that horror games tend to go on cheap pretty quick, so this won’t be a day one purchase.

                  9. Cronos: The New Dawn

5th September – This might not be a purchase at all, and not because it’s coming out on the same day as Silksong. Bloober Team’s stuff has been pretty mid outside of Silent Hill 2, but because I liked that so much I will give this new game of theirs a go. But it can definitely wait till later.

                    10. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds

25th September – Another game guaranteed to appear early in the sales, whether it’s good or bad, so I might actually pick this up if it’s in Black Friday. The Sonic racing games are very underrated in my opinion and while we have had Mario Kart out this year, I feel this might give it a run for its money.
